Christmas at Home: Indoor Family Photo Ideas

Despite quarantining this holiday season, I was determined to get cute holiday photos. I needed the extra holiday cheer! A few weeks ago we took some family photos at home, and they turned out better than I expected, to be honest. Since becoming a parent, I’ve learned how weirdly stressful taking a photo can be, but I found that having an idea ahead of time of what activities to photograph made a big difference. Scroll through our photos and check out my little checklist of indoor family Christmas photo ideas at the bottom of the post. Hopefully it’ll help you get some nice family pictures too.

Decorating the Christmas Tree Photos

These photos are so easy because they’re part of an activity that you would naturally do already. Tips for great decorating the tree photos: let the Christmas tree lights glow by dimming the light in your room. Parents can hold little ones up to reach the tall parts of the tree or bend down to get on their level – both of those make great photos!

Playing with Ornaments Photos

Put a bunch of ornaments on the ground and let little ones have fun playing! If you have spare lights, you can also throw them into the photo, but alas, we did not.

For really little ones, you can also hang the ornaments on the low branches and let them stare, entranced.

Matching Family Holiday Outfits Photos

Everybody loves family matching, right? These look great with kids of all ages.

Of course, just because you wear matching clothes doesn’t mean you can get the shot, but even the bloopers turn out pretty cute.

Drinking Hot Cocoa/Baking with Kids Photos

Put on some cozy clothes, turn on a Christmas movie, and relax with some hot cocoa! I took these photos during a glorious 5 minutes while both the kids were napping.

Aren’t the Trader Joe’s gingerbread man mug hangers so cute? These mugs were a gift from our friends a few years back, but Pottery Barn still has them on sale!

Another food-related Christmas photo idea is to do some baking with kids. Jems and I made these polar bear cupcakes a while back in our matching aprons, and they made for great photos.

Baby’s First Christmas Photo Ideas

Baby’s first Christmas photos are my favorite!! Unfortunately, Kid #2 is already too big to fit into a stocking *cries* but we did get some really cute wrapped-in-a-blanket photos.

Christmas Family Photo Checklist

Here’s the full checklist I put together:

Even without hitting every single idea on this list, I got so many photos. You’d never even know we’re all getting cabin fever stuck quarantining this year. Just kidding. But not really.

Anyway, feel free to pin and save this checklist for yourself! And share your photos with me by tagging me on Instagram. Happy holidays!
