Fall Family Photoshoot Ideas

I never experienced the kind of fall where the leaves change and the air gets crisp until I moved to Seattle. As much as I would love to have warm California weather year round, I have to admit, the fall is GORGEOUS up here. I’m also really trying to do better at getting lots of family photos, especially while the kids are still little. But as any parent knows, getting nice family photos with small children is nothing short of a miracle. Here are a few of our photo ideas for getting kids to take fall family pictures.

1. Lay Down in the Leaves

Our toddler thought this was super fun to lay down in the leaves, especially once she saw baby sister doing it. Also much easier to ensure that everyone is looking at the camera. Plus, look at what an impact the leaves make!

By the way, holding a baby when you’re both wrapped up in puffers is hard. Laying them down in the leaves is much easier.

Mom can dad can get in on the leaf action as well.

2. Step Away From the Trees

If you’re going to stand and hold your kids, make sure you step away from the trees! They’re tall and beautiful, and you want to make sure they can get into the background of your photo. Aim to get the horizon line around your head and you can capture all the leaves on the ground as well.

3. Crouch Down to Their Level

Get a close up picture while still capturing fall leaves on the trees. Crouch down next to your little person, get close to the camera, and step away from the trees. Aim to get the horizon line around your waist and position some funky tree trunks symmetrically on either side!

4. Throw Leaves at the Camera

This one is a great way to get little kids smiling at the camera. Grab a bunch of leaves and throw them on three!

5. Go With the Flow

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you’re still going to get grumpy faces in your photos. Oh well, that’s more reflective of real life anyway. When the kids are older you can all look back at them and laugh. 🙂

These photos are all taken at parks just outside of Seattle, WA. Do you have any favorite spots to take fall family photos? Tell me in the comments or let me know on Instagram.
