This matcha coconut cloud drink went viral on social media and is easy to make. Simply put a matcha cold foam over iced coconut water. See my recipe for vegan or dairy options.

What is the Coconut Cloud Matcha? Or Matcha Coconut Cloud?

I’ve seen the name for this drink written many different ways, but essentially it’s a matcha cold foam on top of iced coconut water. If you’re already a daily matcha drinker, that may be enough information for you to make this yourself. If not, go ahead and use my recipe below! Read through the blog post for ideas on substitutions and where to get the best quality ingredients.

To Sweeten or Not to Sweeten

I do not use any sweetener in my recipe, as I usually don’t add any sweeteners to any of my matcha drinks. When you use a very high quality matcha, it often is not super bitter and has some natural sweetness. If you’ve just got a sweet tooth, feel free to add a liquid sweetener such as maple syrup, agave, or honey to the coconut water. Stir to mix the sweetener evenly in before layering the cold foam on top.

Vegan Cold Foam? Dairy Cold Foam?

If you’re looking for my perfect matcha cold foam with dairy, I’ve got a whole blog post dedicated to just that recipe. It’s essentially matcha plus heavy cream plus whole milk.

BUT I like to give different dietary options, and I found that you can make a fairly decent cold foam with just matcha and soy milk! It doesn’t stay as firm or foamy as long as dairy, but it fluffs up very easily in a milk frother.

Which Matcha to Use? Which Coconut Water?

For all my matcha drinks, I recommend using a very high quality matcha. Don’t worry about labels like ceremonial or culinary. Just go by taste. Some of my favorite brands include Ippodo, Frauth, or Marukyu Koyamoen.

For coconut water, the pink coconut waters with no preservatives taste the best. Harmless Harvest is a tried and true brand. Trader Joe’s also has a pink coconut water in their refrigerated section that is essentially the same thing.

You really do have to like coconut water to enjoy this drink, just FYI. It does not taste the same as matcha lattes made with coconut milk. I occasionally drink coconut water for the electrolytes and added health benefits, especially after a workout. It’s really refreshing on a hot summer’s day. If you’re looking for a healthy, not-super-creamy matcha drink, then this will be perfect for you. Give it a try!
