How to Cook Lap Cheong (Chinese Sausage) in a Rice Cooker

Rice cooker lap cheong, a.k.a. Chinese sausage, is the EASIEST Chinese food you could ever make. The sausage links go directly on top of your rice and water in the rice cooker pot. Press the button and wait for deliciously sweet and salty lap cheong. When I first posted some videos to Instagram of me cooking lap cheong in a rice cooker, I thought it was common knowledge. Turns out a lot of people (Asians included) didn’t know you could cook food in a rice cooker! So stash away some lap cheong in your cupboard, and come back to this blog post when you’re craving Chinese rice dishes.

Wait, What is Lap Cheong?

Lap cheong is the generic Cantonese name for Chinese sausage. The main difference between Chinese sausage and typical American sausage is that Chinese sausage is much, much sweeter. To me, this balance between sweet and salty is perfect for a complete meal, instead of leaving me craving pancakes. You can find dried lap cheong in packages at any Asian grocery store, or even some Costcos! It’s kept at room temperature until you open it, which makes it great for stashing in your pantry as emergency food. You can find fresh lap cheong too at some markets, but even my grandparents buy the dried stuff, so why shouldn’t you?

Other Chinese Recipes to Eat with Lap Cheong

While I wait for my rice and lap cheong to cook, I usually boil up some veggies as a side. Try my 5-minute Chinese vegetables if you’re like me and can’t have a complete meal without veggies.

The recipe below works in my small 3-cup rice cooker. (This is the one I have.) It’s JUUUUST enough for two, not-starving adults. If you have a larger rice cooker, I recommend making more because this stuff is addicting.

I like to eat my lap cheong cut up like in the photos, but you could chop it up ever finer and throw it into fried rice as well. I once tried to grind it up and put it into chili, but Portuguese sausage works way better for that.

Is it your first time eat lap cheong? Or your first time cooking in the rice cooker? Let me know what you think!
