Add this pimped out IKEA toy kitchen hack to your holiday gift list! This DIY not only looks like a million bucks, but it’s also super cheap and easy to make! If you can thrift your kitchen playset, even better.

When I first saw these upgraded IKEA toy kitchen hacks on Pinterest, I knew we had to make one for Jemma. We scoured Facebook marketplace for months until a cheap play kitchen popped up, and we ended up finding one in great condition for only $40.
The actual DIY is quite simple. We spray painted the “hardware” gold and painted the cabinets with the leftover paint from our (real) kitchen remodel. It worked out quite nicely that we had that leftover paint, because now our mini play kitchen matched our real kitchen exactly!
We used contact paper for the fake marble countertops and for the backsplash, which is just a piece of poster board attached to the back of the kitchen. I linked the exact ones we bought from Amazon, but I’ll also link some of the fancier and more expensive ones you can get at Target.
The play kitchen accessories you see here are a mix of IKEA and Melissa and Doug.
And that’s it! How easy and cheap was that? The total cost, INCLUDING our thrifted kitchen was about $50, since we only had to buy the two patterned contact papers. And yet doesn’t it look like such an amazing upgrade? I’m dying at how it’s basically an exact replica of our real kitchen too. Ugh, so cute!!
What other cute kids DIY should we attempt next? If you find anything good, send it to me on Instagram! In the meantime, I will just be here playing in this fake copy of a real room in our house.

[…] It’s pretty well known that play is great for kids; in fact, it’s how they learn! Pretend play is especially great because it helps kids understand the concepts of symbolism and taking perspectives. Within the category of pretend play, I like to look at toys that promote role play – like a play kitchen, baby doll and accessories, or dress up costumes. If you’re feeling like doing a DIY, make sure you check out how we upgraded Jemma’s IKEA play kitchen. […]
