If a banana cream pie and a matcha latte had a baby, it would be this banana cream matcha recipe. Inspired by the banana creme matcha latte from Okayama Kobo Bakery, this is a decadent matcha drink that’s surprisingly easy to make at home. Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links.
While visiting my parents back in southern California, I went to Okayama Kobo Bakery, where they were serving a special seasonal drink: banana creme matcha. Well, naturally, I HAD TO HAVE IT! And it was everything good about the world. Bananas. Matcha. Some crunchy cookie crumbs.
Back home in gray, rainy Seattle, I find myself craving for that sunny spot of California… that banana creme matcha. And while I don’t normally go all out with my matcha, adding whipped toppings and cookie crumbs and whatnot, every once in a while it’s really fun. AND! It happens to be really easy as well.
How to Make Banana Matcha Latte
The first step in this drink is to make a banana matcha latte, which I’ve already made a blog post about. If you don’t want to be fancy, you can go there and follow those instructions. But basically, I just blend matcha, banana, water, and milk together. You don’t even have to sift the matcha; that’s how easy this is.
Now if you’re ready to take this to the next level, you need to make your banana whipped cream.
How to Make Banana Whipped Cream
The secret ingredient to banana whipped cream is Jello Instant Banana Pudding Mix. I kid you not. This is also the exact ingredient that Magnolia Bakery uses in their famous banana pudding. And EVERY TIME I make their banana pudding, it gets rave reviews. Do not doubt the Jello Instant Pudding Mix.
All you have to do is whip 1 tbsp of the mix with 1/2 cup heavy cream. That’s it!
Another bonus is that mixing instant pudding with heavy whipping cream stabilizes the whipped cream so that it doesn’t melt and deflate as fast! That’s how I made my whipped cream frosting for my ube cupcakes and my matcha cupcakes. Jello Instant Pudding… the gift that keeps on giving. Jello, if you’re reading this, you should sponsor me.
Anyway, lastly just crush a vanilla wafer for your cookie crumb topping. This drink is really like the Magnolia Bakery banana pudding in matcha latte form.
