When I first created my baby registry for Jemma, there was an overwhelming amount of suggested items. On top of all that, Instagram pushed photo after photo of styled baby apparel, gear, and accessories into my feed. But what baby items did I really need? And were they worth the price of buying from cute boutique shops? Now that I’m going through the baby stage for the second time, I’ve learned what items I am glad I spent some extra money on, and I’m listing my favorites here!
I would love to only shop small local businesses. However, having babies is expensive. Buying generic brands from big retailers saves a lot of money. So the first time around, I was really looking to make practical, functional purchases. Now with a second baby, I’m realizing how much quality makes a difference. While every purchase I made from Amazon has been totally functional, every item I bought from a smaller business has been MUCH better quality. They’ve also brought me more JOY. They’re cute! They look great in family photos. So here are a few of my suggested splurges.
1. Mini Scout Swaddle
I really recommend buying at least one really nice swaddle. It makes newborn photos look that much more special. Plus, the more expensive swaddles from small businesses like Mini Scout are infinitely softer and stretchier than my generic ones. Other swaddles like Aden and Anais are totally functional and retail for $10 less per swaddle. But I always find myself reaching for the softer, prettier blankets. Bonus, Mini Scout is local to Washington!
2. Solly Baby Wrap
A wrap style baby carrier isn’t for everyone. It was perfect for my two babies, however, as they were way too small for other types of carriers until they got older. I originally had a generic wrap from Amazon. It did the job. But once I got a Solly Baby Wrap I could never go back. The Solly Baby Wrap is not only GORGEOUS, but it was a million times lighter and more breathable, making it more comfortable and easy to wear both for me and for baby. Totally worth it.
3. Wildbird Ring Sling
Again, the type of baby carrier you use is completely up to your preference. However, I’ve tried on several ring slings, and I love Wildbird. Their colors and patterns are beautiful, and honestly, their prices are actually very competitive compared to other babywearing companies. I’ve also been able to resell some older styles of slings at close to retail. If you’re going to be carrying a bunch of baby gear with you, you might as well look cute while doing it.
4. Kate Quinn Organics Clothing
Yes, I do still buy cheap kids clothes from Target. With the amount of outfit changes we go through, I can’t afford not to. However, if you’re going to buy nicer clothes from a smaller boutique, Kate Quinn is the place to go! The fabric is so insanely soft, and the color palettes are beautiful. They’re not even that expensive if you shop the sales! Another bonus: Kate Quinn is another Washington local business!
5. Gathre Mat
Waterproof mats are a must. The first time around, I bought a generic plastic splat mat. I used it both as a changing mat and for underneath the high chair, but it was super thin and really slippery. When I finally bought a Gathre mat, I wished I had gotten one from the start. With a suede bottom, it won’t slip out from under you or get bunched up during tummy time. Its vegan leather top is also super comfortable to walk on. And when we’re done using it as a play mat, we’ll be bringing it outdoors with us for picnics at the park.
Bonus: BabyZen Yoyo Stroller – Best Travel Stroller for Petite Moms
Okay, a Babyzen stroller is not exactly a boutique purchase, but it is an investment that has been so worth it. We’ve used a Graco stroller and other generic brands while on vacation. While, again, those other strollers are totally functional, the difference in quality is stark. We absolutely love how compact and lightweight the Babyzen is, while still feeling really sturdy. This is the ONLY stroller we would dare to bring to Pike Place, where you have to navigate crowds (pre-COVID), small alleys, and go up and down steps quickly. I’ve heard that this stroller is popular in big cities on the East Coast and in Europe, and I can totally see why.
