Welcome back to our virtual house tour! In my last post, I showed you guys our two-tone kitchen reno. That was our biggest project. For the rest of the house, we didn’t change much. Here in our living room, we gave the wood paneling a fresh coat of paint and bought a modern couch and area rug. There’s not much to it, but go ahead and take a look!

Mid Century (ish) Living Room Furniture
The original house plan for this 1957 split level had the kitchen closed off from the living room. Thankfully, it appears the previous owners knocked the walls partially down to create a more open floor plan. For the furniture and decor, we tried to keep it mid century-ish to go with the house. We didn’t stick exactly to the era, since I don’t actually want to feel like I’m in the 1960’s. So, maybe it’s just modern? I’m not an interior designer; I don’t really know anything.
We kept this foldable Japanese coffee table we got off Amazon, since it went with our modern theme. The couch is the Auburn sofa from West Elm, which is surprisingly affordable.
Please don’t judge our mess. This is actually what it looks like cleaned up, but it normally is a war zone.
Modern Living Room Area Rug
When we were first decorating our living room, I polled Instagram about favorite kid-friendly rugs. I swear at least 30 people messaged me. I never felt so popular in my life. In the end, we went with this modern trellis shag rug from Rugs USA. It was SO CHEAP that I don’t care if my children trash it after a few years, and the style matches our modern decor. It’s definitely not the NICEST rug I’ve ever felt, but it’s good enough to put the baby on.
Pink Modern Home Office Space
This modern office space with the pink swivel chair is my favorite little corner in the living room – maybe even in the whole house! The wood mini desk fits perfectly in the small corner space. It was SUPER CHEAP (noticing a theme here? Yeah, I like cheap) from Target and like a fourth of the price of the mid century desk I liked from West Elm. Of course, the Target one is sold out now, but I’ll link the West Elm version in case you’re feeling more spendy than me.
I can’t decide if I love my pink swivel chair or my desktop house plants more. I took these pictures in the summer, and since then all the plants have outgrown their pots. These days, I just have a lonely little pilea I got from Trader Joe’s.
The pink office chair is from Overstock, and I love it so much, I wish I had 10 more office spaces to find other funky office chairs for.
And that wraps up our living room tour. Stay tuned for photos from the kids’ rooms coming up next.
